The Palestinian Circus School, is traveling to Belgium and
France between 2 and 17 of February 2008

In a step transcending many barriers in the Palestinian society connected to the oppression of our art and history, the Palestinian Circus School gives rise to something new. An artistic form of amusement only known through TV and sporadic visits of circuses from abroad, is now being turned into a new way of expression for Palestinians. A new way to deliver the idea of resistance to the occupation and imprisonment.
A way to live and demand the right to existence.
The idea for the show "Circus behind the wall" is taken from the real life of Palestinians who are separated from their water, their land, their past and their loved ones by the segregation wall. We see sisters being separated; we see loved ones not able to reach each other any longer. All things in reach in circus are being used to overcome the barriers: juggling balls, a trapeze, stilts. We see acrobats, a clown or jugglers dancing the life. The wall does not discourage them to live, to communicate, to move, to dream and to fight for a free land.
Circus behind the wall reflects the strong belief that one day the wall will fall.

The Palestinian Circus School was established in July 2006 and started with a first group of 10 students and the first show “Circus behind the Wall”. In February 2007 the school opened it’s doors for children from Ramallah and gives weekly sessions for children in Hebron and Jenin.

The school offers children a safe environment for their development.
A place where they learn to cooperate, concentrate and express themselves. The focus is on teamwork and on restoring a positive self image. Confronted with violence, desperation and deprivation of most of their mains basic rights, we want to offer them ways to deal with their environment in a creative way. Breaking the spiral of repeating the damage inflicted on them. Offering them new social role models.
In last instance the circus school wants to offer them a window on the world through the rich international cooperation we aim at.

Reservations for the show should be made at the locations were the shows will be held.

Our trip to Belgium is coordinated by Les Halles de Schaerbeek (www.halles.be) in the framework of the Palestinian Cultural Season MASARAT, in cooperation with PAC, Progrès Action Culturelles (www.pac-g.be) and ESAC, Ecole Superieure des Arts de Cirque (www.esac.be) and can count on the financial support of the CGRI.

During our trip our students will be welcomed for a workshop of 3 days at ESAC.

Our presentation in Tournai also makes part of the larger program of PAC “Assoir l‘espoir” – “seat down the hope”, a huge support project for the Palestinian Circus School through making and selling artistic chairs in 4 cities in Belgium.

lettera con preghiera di diffusione

Gerusalemme, 25 agosto 2006

Incontro Shadi Zmorrod in un caffe'.
Mentre piovono bombe in tutti i dintorni, qualcuno continua a sognare
e tenta disperatamente di realizzare i suoi sogni.
Shadi uomo palestinese di 27 anni mi racconta che sta lavorando per
mettere sù la prima scuola di circo palsetinese, a Ramallah, uno dei
territori palestinesi occupati. (Un posto in cui per entrare e uscire
attraversi il muro e se sei un palestinese che entra o che esce da
casa sua, i soldati possono decidere di trattenerti al check point.)

Quindici ragazzi e ragazze palestinesi dai 16 ai 28 anni, seguono i corsi
di formazione: saranno gli insegnanti della scuola di circo di Ramallah.
Purtroppo, i trainer che dovevano arrivare da un circo belga, all'ultimo
momento non se la sono sentita di venire a stare qui in questo momento,
la Guerra è una brutta bestia!!!
Ma Shadi non si arrende ed è così che comincia a mandare comunicati
via internet alla ricerca di volontari.

Per ora la scuola è portata avanti da:
un allenatore palestinese per l'acrobatica,
una trapezista palestinese di 16 anni,
un giocoliere americano,
io che insegno trampoli, fune e come stare sulla scena,
Patrice (giocoleria) e Maloe (fune) due professionisti francesi,
Shadi che è un manager e un regista,
Jessica, una ragazza belga che si sta occupando di tutta
l'amministrazione...

Abbiamo a disposizione i pasti gratis per tutti noi, offerti dal miglior
ristorante di Ramallah, il teatro Ashtar in prestito, un trapezio, dei
materassi, un paio di trampoli che ho costruito con un falegname
palestinese e ed è così che lavoriamo intensamente per venti
giorni dalle nove del mattino sino a notte inoltrata.
Le sorelle gemelle a cui insegno fune e trampoli sono sorprendenti e
così ognuno dei futuri trainers.
In una di queste mattine, il teatro apre le porte anche ai bambini di
Ramallah ed è così che i trainers hanno la prima esperienza di
insegnamento, sono incredibilmente professionali affrontando trapezio,
palline e acrobatica .

Nel frattempo io e Shadi cominciamo a pensare a come presentare al
pubblico il lavoro e come per miracolo (siamo in terra santa!) nasce
"Circus behind the wall" un vero e proprio spettacolo circense che
dura un ora e mezzo in cui ognuno dei protagonisti racconta col proprio
corpo la sua storia e salta il muro con acrobazie, funi, trampoli, trapezio.
La gente è in delirio, nel Ashtar theatre non si è mai visto tanto pubblico,
le donne velate siedono per terra, in prima fila e le loro spalle sfiorano le
spalle del vicino.
I muri si infrangono, tutti sorridono e si muovono tra le sale del teatro
guidati da un soldato clown che impugna un finto mitra.
Rappresentiamo ironicamente la realtà che ogni palestinese affronta
quotidianamente: check point, umiliazioni, soldati, il muro.
La storia inizia con un padre conservatore che sgrida il figlio, perchè il
circo è una perdita di tempo e alla fine è così orgoglioso che applaude
fiero.
Così alla fine dello show il ministro della cultura sale sul palco e dice
pubblicamente che all´ínizio si sentiva proprio come quel padre, ma
ora, fiero del risultato farà di tutto pe sostenere il circo e parteciperà
alla spesa per il tendone. Abbiamo vinto!
E la sera dopo si replica con un pubblico ancora più numeroso, lo
spettacolo migliora ed esterrefatti, decidiamo che "Circus behind the wall"
deve andare avanti, lavoreremo ancora dieci giorni alle rifiniture e poi lo
spettacolo è pronto per varcare il muro.

Aspettiamo inviti da festival, associazioni, teatri.
Emozionati assistiamo partecipi alla celebrazione del corpo in un territorio
così castigante, spingiamo affinchè il muro cada e restituisca libertà
e dignità a questa gente.
E´un azione poeticamente politica, che si accinge a cambiare la storia.

Gerusalem, The 5 of August 2006

it is a month that I'm in the desert, and finally I go to visit the holy land.
I meet in a coffee shop Shadi Zmorrod a 27 years old man.
While rackets are throwing off the sky, someone continues to dream.
And works to make dream true.

Shadi is working for the first palestinan school of circus in Ramhallah.
The school has started 5 days ago: 15 palestinian girls and boys are
training to be trainers.
The 3 trainers from Belgium that would have been their trainers,
didn't come because of the war, so the circus school started with
some difficulties.

But Shadi goes on, and wrote a document, a help letter to all
the cultural association all around the world.

He is working as a mad, meeting people and trying to make connetion.
He met also me, and told me about his project.
After two hours I jumped in his car and now I will teach them how to
use the stills, how to walk on the rope, and how to stay on the stage.

We need other volunteers!
At the moment we have an acrobatic trainer, a trapezist,
two jugglers, a director, an actress (stills, rope, me!),
an administrator, some carpets, a trapezio, a pair of still,
a rope, just one pair of shoes for the rope (mine),
and 15 guys that are working hard with their body.

It is important, now for us to receive everything, also one juggling's
ball is important now!
We are guest in a theatre in Ramallah, waiting for the tempt of circus.
The best restaurant in Ramallah is feeding us for free.
Shadi is triying connection with the most important circus in the world.
